Monkeypox is a viral disease that affects humans and other animals. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus. The virus was first identified in 1958 when outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in monkeys kept for research. Monkeypox is primarily found in Central and West African countries, particularly in rural regions close to tropical rainforests.

Transmission of monkeypox to humans can occur through direct contact with infected animals, such as rodents or primates, or through contact with the bodily fluids or lesions of infected humans. It can also spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, contact with skin lesions, or by touching contaminated objects.
