If you’ve never watched a horse meat-spin a rodent until its tail separates from its body, only for the horse to then swallow it, guess what - you are like most people. Although horses can consume the flesh of other animals when the going gets tough, it is not part of their regular diet. A horse's teeth and digestive system are optimized for crushing hay, grass, and other vegetation because they provide just about everything they need to function. I say “just about” because there is obviously something driving these “100% vegans” to indulge in verboten delights. Some say it's a nutrient fix, and there is evidence to support that. Others say it is primarily driven by curiosity or boredom, and both sides could be right.

If you take anything away from this incoherent rambling, let it be this: the idea that there are ultra strict herbivores in the world might be comforting to some, but it's not necessarily the truth. The food web is a complex and ever evolving system, and just when we think we have a handle on it, we get thrown a curveball and must rewrite the entire thing. Our desire to make sense of the absolute chaos of the natural world drives us to slot these beings into rigid categories that only tell a fraction of the story.
