When threatened, these remarkable creatures inflate their bodies by rapidly swallowing water or air, transforming into spiky balloons to deter predators. Their skin becomes stretched and rigid, making it difficult for predators to swallow them. Some puffer fish species even have sharp spines covering their bodies, adding an extra layer of protection. Interestingly, the toxins found in certain puffer fish species can be highly poisonous to predators and even humans if consumed. However, in Japan, skilled chefs carefully prepare a dish called fugu, made from puffer fish, which is considered a delicacy when the toxins are meticulously removed.
