4 TOOL drum grooves - coordination builders! #drumbeats

Learning TOOL songs was absolutely one of the best formative decisions for my coordination skills. What began as a struggle, ultimately became some of the most enjoyable things for me to play.

And now I’ve watched this same scenario come to pass with almost every student I’ve ever had. When you’re learning a song and you run into a new challenge that seems totally insurmountable, you’re bound to get overwhelmed by it. You may even HATE it.

That’s when you need to take a step back and breathe. Try changing something about the way you’re working on it. Take it slower, just play small chunks, or in some cases, intentionally do it wrong. This seems counterintuitive, but then sometimes it’s the most beneficial practice method because when you master playing it incorrectly you’ll be able to more readily identify when you’re making mistakes.

I use this method a lot when students are inadvertently swinging a pattern that should be played straight. It may seem crazy but it works!

Who did you jam to when you started playing?
