Today, Memorial Day represents the start of the summer season and has lost its original meaning of honoring those who have fought and died for the fundamental principles and values this country was established to protect: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"

This year, let's restore the original meaning to Memorial Day by recalling its history rooted in the Civil War and one of the greatest Americans of all time, Frederick Douglass.
