Is Everyone a Child of God?

The bible is clear that we become children of God upon adoption through the Holy Spirit, when we accept Christ through faith and are born again. Yet the world says that everyone is a child of God. But if everyone is a child of God, what does this say to Jesus and what does it mean about the gospel?
