For BJJ students of all levels, getting stuck under the mount can be a nightmare. And realistically, under some mounts, escape is, well, basically impossible. In the gi, no one escaped Roger Gracie's mount. And in nogi, Gordon Ryan has been making an escape impossible for even the very best. Still, for new students, getting some fundamental principles clear very early can make a huge difference.

OY BOYS! That's an acronym I created for "Off-Your-Back-On-Your-Side". That will serve you well under any control position so don't forget it. And for escaping, a good fundamental principle to start with is to watch (and feel) carefully your Uke's weight distribution and use it to your advantage.
1. Get off your back and on your side. This allows you to get more comfortable in a very uncomfortable position.
2. If Uke's weight goes back, tripod up and continue to drive him back
3. If Uke's weight comes forward, accelerate it and go deep out the back door.
Clearly, escaping the mount against a skilled Uke is never simple. But these three principles will help immensely.
