The Los Angeles City Council has made a controversial decision, voting 8-4 to allow the LAPD to accept a donation of a robot dog. Valued at $277,000, this Boston Dynamics "SPOT" quadruped unmanned ground vehicle will be used by the police department's SWAT unit during select instances like active shootings, hostage situations, and search and rescue operations. However, concerns have been raised about the expansion of police powers and potential surveillance implications. This move follows a similar debate in San Francisco last year, where a proposal to allow robots to use force was eventually banned.
