Super Mario Odyssey (スーパーマリオ オデッセイ Sūpā Mario Odessei?) is a platform game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development and published by Nintendo. It was released worldwide on October 27, 2017 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.[1] It is the seventh three-dimensional platform game in the mainline Super Mario series, returning to the more freewheeling level design seen in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.[2] In the game, Mario's iconic hat becomes its own character (Cappy).[3]

The game was developed by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development, and development began shortly after the release of Super Mario 3D World in 2013. Several ideas were suggested during development, and to incorporate all of them, the team decided to develop a game style sandbox. Unlike previous installments like New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 3D World, which were aimed at a casual audience, the team designed Super Mario Odyssey to appeal to core fans of the series. The game also features a vocal theme song, "Jump Up, Super Star!", a first for the series.

Super Mario Odyssey received critical acclaim upon release, with praise being directed towards its inventiveness, presentation and originality, as well as for reiterating and enhancing concepts introduced in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The title was cited as one of the best games in the Mario franchise, entering several lists of best video games in history and winning numerous awards, including some for Game of the Year. Odyssey has sold over 23.5 million copies as of March 2022, making it one of the best-selling Switch games of all time.
