DAY19: Does Jesus Support Capital Punishment? (Discussion on this starts at 11:21-16:30

Good evening. Great is His faithfulness. Christ is in our midst.

"JESUS ARRIVES AT THE FESTIVAL AND BEGINS TEACHING" - John 7:10-36

John 7:17: " If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority."

Having the simple desire to both know and follow God's will are the ultimate keys to understanding or paths with God. Spiritual blindness comes from the unwillingness and rejection to KNOW God or even to recognize His authority.

St. John Chrysostom- paraphrases Christ in this way: "Rid yourselves of wickedness: the anger, the envy, the hatred which have arisen in your hearts, without provocation, against Me. Then you will have no difficulty in realizing that My words are actually those of God. As it is, these passions darken your understanding and distort sound judgment. If you remove these passions, you will no longer be afflicted in this way."

"STREAMS OF LIVING WATER"- John 7:37-8:1

"If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink." The living water (v. 38) is the gift of the Holy Spirit -(v. 39) and the new life that accompanies this gift.

"A WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY" - John 8:2-11

This story of "The woman caught in adultery" is not found in several ancient manuscripts, and is not mentioned in the commentaries of St. John Chrysostom and also certain other Fathers. However it's sealed by the Church as inspired, and authentic, canonical SCRIPTURE. THE LAW- dictated the death penalty for adulterers (Lv 20:10). This wasn't observed to the letter in the days of Jesus; the Pharisees did this as a test for Jesus, because if Jesus objected to the punishment, He could be accused of opposing the Law, and if He upheld it, He would have been seen of showing no mercy to the sinners.

Christ's answer disturbs the Pharisees, for He upholds a great principle of the Law- that the wages of sin is death (Genesis 2:17-Romans 6:23)- and also without neglecting a greater aspect of mercy - (Deuteronomy 13:17- Psalm 116(117):2-117(118):4- Hosea 6:6). This mercy is given to all repentant sinners. For us to receive this gift, we must all turn and flee from sin -( see v. 11- John 8).

Matthew 5:17-18: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one [b]jot or one [c]tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

QUESTION: "Does Jesus support Capital Punishment, or is He teaching us mercy when he called ou the Pharisees hypocrisy?"

"THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD" - John 8:12-30

John 8:12: Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Numbers 6:24-26

“The Lord bless you and keep you;

25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,

And be gracious to you;

26 The Lord [a]lift up His countenance upon you,

And give you peace.” ’
