Turbo Making a Knocking Noise?

In this video I share some audio and visual of a turbo that is making a knocking noise. The particular part on the turbo that was making the noise is the vacuum controlled waste gate actuator. The actuator had a busted diaphragm and whenever vacuum was applied to it the actuator it would start to move but immediately would slap back to it's starting position as it could not hold vacuum.

The vehicle in the video is 2017 Ford Escape with a 1.5L. However the Ford Escape is not the only vehicle out there that has a turbo equipped with a vacuum controlled waste gate. This information can potentially apply to many vehicles that have a turbo with a vacuum controlled waste gate actuator. (Always refer to your repair manual for information concerning "theory and operation " of any component on your vehicle. There could be differences. )

Note: in some cases a failure of the waste gate actuator diaphragm could be caused by the failure of another component, like a leaking vacuum pump. It is possible that vacuum pumps could leak oil into the diaphragm through the vacuum supply tube. Just FYI. Be sure your repair all root causes or repeat failure could occur.

Also, some waste gate actuators are serviceable separately from the turbo. That wasn't the case for the vehicle featured in the video.
