A Billion Dollar Band-aid: Analyzing Biden's New Homelessness Plan

In an interesting turn of events, the White House recently went live to announce a new initiative called "All Inside" with a broad objective of reducing homelessness by 25% by 2025. The plan, backed by 17 or 19 government agencies, targets five major cities in California and Seattle. As part of President Biden's strategy, the initiative seeks to streamline local efforts to provide shelter for homeless individuals across these metropolitan areas. However, as we cut through the applauding bureaucrats, it's time to ask whether this grand initiative might just be a drop in the ocean.

Ironically, the underlying issues of homelessness are seldom addressed. The man on the street with a knife, exposing himself while mutilating his body, is not an aberration but a grim reminder of the underlying mental health and addiction crisis. This man and countless others need more than just a roof over their heads. They require comprehensive treatment, therapy, and care. But unfortunately, the initiative is akin to putting a band-aid on a wound that needs stitches.

One can't help but question the logic of investing billions into housing alone, while bypassing the core issues at play. In a decade-long span, Seattle has spent nearly $1 billion on homelessness and yet, the number of unsheltered people continues to rise. Therefore, to truly get to grips with homelessness, it's essential to confront the elephant in the room - addiction, mental health disorders, and a lack of comprehensive support systems. This isn't about dismissing the initiatives in place, but highlighting the pressing need for an approach that addresses the root causes, not just the symptoms.
