BYB 17’s Zion Tomlinson: “One of the Highest Ranked Bare-Knuckle Fighters on the Planet”

Zion Tomlinson defeated Mattia Loi-Fonda by way of a second-round KO at BYB 17: Brawl at Rock Hill.

He has had five BKFC fights but this was Tomlinson’s first foray into the Mighty Trigon.

Tomlinson felt the confines of the BYB Extreme space allowed for his power to land even quicker. Also, the round increments in BYB being three minutes instead of BKFC’s two-minute rounds was a unique consideration while competing as well.

Tomlinson felt this framework showcased his ability to drown an opponent with his pace over a longer fight in addition to generating those quick knockouts.

He dropped Loi-Fonda twice and when asked how he saw the opening in that situation, Tomlinson said,

“Well, I know there’s levels to bare-knuckle and I’m one of the highest ranked bare-knuckle fighters on the planet. I fought the top of the top and man, it was a good; he’s a good fighter. I knew I had the skill and the reach to my advantage.”

When asked how the aggressiveness of Loi-Fonda played into his approach in the bout, Tomlinson stated, “Well, I welcome the big meat heads. I like fighting those type of guys because it makes for a more exciting knockout.”

He knew from tape study that his opponent would fight with that kind of dogged, forward pursuit which plays well into Tomlinson’s skills as a counter striker. He saw that as his key to victory and it all played out relative to Tomlinson’s preconceived notions.

All three of Tomlinson’s bare-knuckle wins are by way of stoppage now. He feels like he’s fought the best of the best and is ready to court a bidding war between BYB Extreme as well as BKFC with his present status in the sport.

Tomlinson returned to the win column here and also said it felt good to score the KO to boot. He loves throwing knuckles but Tomlinson is admittedly not keen on catching them, conversely.

As far as what’s next, Zion Tomlinson is ready for 185 or 205 opportunities and wants the smoke from anyone.
