MMA's most controversial referee - Steve Mazagatti

Referees play a very important role in MMA fights. They have to ensure that both fighters stay safe and the fight is called at exactly the right time. Most of the current referees do a great job with only the very occasional slip-up. However, Steve Mazagatti was so bad at refereeing that his qualifications were often called into question. Dana White pretty much referred to him as the worst ref ever and with good reason. Steve often seemed blind to what was happening in the octagon. A great example of this was when he failed to spot even one of the many eye pokes suffered by the late Anthony Johnson at the hands of Kevin Burns. He also failed to see that Jon Fitch was out cold until Joshua Burkman released his choke hold. Similarly, Ronda Rousey had barely locked in the armbar on Sarah D'Alelio and Steve called for a finish. How The Nevada State Athletic Commission kept him employed for so many years is a mystery that may never be solved.
