Abraham Lincoln Life Lessons That Going To Change You Forever.
The 16th president of the United States (1861–65), also known as Honest Abe, the Rail-Splitter, or the Great Emancipator, was born on February 12, 1809, near Hodgenville, Kentucky, and passed away on April 15, 1865, in Washington, D.C. He preserved the Union during the American Civil War and brought about the emancipation of slaves in the country.
While cutting rails for fences, running a store, and working on a farm in New Salem, Illinois, Lincoln made unusual efforts to further his education. He served as a captain in the Black Hawk War, served in the Illinois Assembly for eight years, and spent many years on the judicial circuit. According to his law partner, "His ambition was a little engine that knew no rest."
Lincoln continues to be one of America's most popular figures among both citizens of the United States and people from other countries. His fascinating life story—his climb from poor beginnings and dramatic death—as well as his distinctly human and kind nature, as well as his historical roles as the Union's savior and an emancipator of slaves—all contribute to his charm.
His continued and increasing significance is largely a result of his persuasiveness as a proponent of democracy. He believed that the Union was valuable not just for its own purpose but also because it represented an ideal, namely the ideal of self-government. In recent years, as researchers have continued to find Lincoln to be a fascinating subject for study, the political aspect of his personality, and his racial beliefs in particular, have come under serious analysis. On May 30, 1922, he was honored with a dedication at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Lincoln made sure that no one ever forgot that the Civil War involved a much more significant problem. He said this most movingly when he dedicated the military cemetery at Gettysburg: "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
