As New Progressive Mayor Takes Office in Chicago Big Businesses Already Threatening to Leave!
Riding on the heels of former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Chicago's new mayor, Brandon Johnson, has set his sights on big business and high earners for tax hikes to fund his Progressive agenda. Almost as if caught in a ghastly dream, major firms in the city are voicing their readiness to vacate rather than bear the brunt of the new financial strategy. In a telling illustration, CME Group Incorporated, a significant player in the city's economy, has indicated their unwillingness to be on the receiving end of Johnson's fiscal hammer. As critics put it, the Progressive newcomer seems to ignore the glaring examples of business exodus from cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, LA, and New York, showing little sign of breaking away from this concerning trend.
While businesses are poised to pull up stakes, the city is grappling with serious issues such as increasing crime, influx of migrants, and a lack of public safety. To the despair of business leaders, Johnson seems more concerned with raising taxes to further his agenda, brushing off warnings from influential firms like Tyson, Caterpillar, and Boeing. The crux of the problem lies not just in the new mayor's policies, but also in the city's voters, who, in an ironic twist, seem to have chosen this path. It's like a line from the film Wall Street, "It's all about business, not based on emotion," yet emotion seems to have ruled the day.
What the mayor fails to realize is that the city's appeal for businesses lies not in its taxes, but in its security and stability, both of which appear to be spiraling downwards. With an evident lack of focus on crime control and public safety, Chicago's image is progressively diminishing. The undercurrent of the discourse hints at a severe lack of pragmatism in Johnson's approach, as squeezing big business seems to be his short-term plan for a long-term problem. As the saying goes, "you squeeze until there's nothing more to squeeze," but what happens when there's nothing left?
