Should you buy gold as an investment? Investing in gold comes down to a few things: diversification, risk, and reward and there are some major pros and cons to investing in gold especially in helping you during an outbreak or recession / downturn.

While many don’t consider gold an investment, gold has historically gone up in value, although only slightly more than inflation. However, what makes gold unique as an investment is its tendency to operate separate from real estate and stocks. So for example, if you invest in stocks and real estate, adding gold as an investment could mean that while stocks are crashing and real estate is stagnating, gold can be going up. Obviously, this isn’t a guarantee and doesn’t always happen — just like gold isn’t always down when stocks are up.

Though this does make gold a very unique candidate as an emergency fund. Think: You generally need money most when stocks and real estate are losing value and people are losing jobs. Gold can be there to help you then.

There are also a few different ways to buy gold. You can buy into gold exchange-traded funds like iShares IAU or the legendary GLD. You can also buy bullion directly. Unfortunately, buying gold directly can create some complications — like storage, insurance, and security.
