Scientists think that prime real estate for extraterrestrial life lies in the "habitable zones" of solar systems—regions where conditions are just right for liquid water to exist. But how do you see a planet outside of our solar system in the first place? Astronomer Dimitar Sasselov explains how researchers use the Kepler space telescope to spot planets circling distant stars in this clip from "Alien Life: Will We Know It When We See I?", part of the Big Ideas series at the 2014 World Science Festival.
