2 years after Bitcoin was created, Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer, made history by buying two Papa John's pizzas for 10,000 BTC. At the time, the value of those pizzas was about $41. This was the first recorded use of Bitcoin being used to buy anything. Today 10,000 BTC would be worth approx. $270,000,000.00.

Although I bet he feels horrible not keeping them and becoming super rich, he is famous for giving Bitcoin monetary value by being the first person in history to purchase something in the physical world. At the time, Bitcoin had no real value and was selling for pennies each or given away for signing up for mailing groups or solving reCAPTCHA puzzles.

His actions touched off a different way of looking at Bitcoin and set off a firestorm of interest in Bitcoin. A year later, Bitcoin was selling for $1 each. By the end of 2011, Bitcoin had reached $30 each.

And the rest is history...
