From 1929 to 1974, the state of North Carolina forcibly sterilized more than 7,500 people—a program supposedly aimed at eliminating “feeble-mindedness” and other ills, but more often than not targeting the poor, the disabled, and African-Americans. On June 30, the deadline passed for victims of North Carolina’s forced sterilization program to file for compensation from the state’s $10 million fund. At the 2014 World Science Festival program “Designer Genes: Fashioning Our Biological Future,” Duke University law and philosophy professor Nita Farahany provides background on the history of eugenics in America.
