The Bat (1926)

1926 directed by Roland West and starring George Beranger, Charles Herzinger, Emily Fitzroy, Louise Fazenda, Arthur Housman, Robert McKim, Jack Pickford and Lee Shumway. A writer rents an old, dark mansion that may be a target of The Bat, a seedy criminal who dresses up in a Halloween get-up and haunts places.

Based on a 1920 hit Broadway play, The Bat by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood, which itself was an adaptation of Rinehart's 1908 mystery novel The Circular Staircase.
