Special counsel John Durham has concluded his four-year investigation into the FBI's probe of alleged links between Russia and Donald Trump's 2016 campaign. In his scathing report, Durham criticized the bureau for disregarding its own rules and failing to consider information that countered allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. He highlighted the FBI's "seriously deficient" behavior and its reliance on unverified reports, such as the discredited Steele dossier. While Durham did not recommend new criminal charges, he urged the FBI to appoint an agent or lawyer to oversee politically sensitive investigations. Despite the rebuke, no wholesale changes to the FBI's guidelines or policies were suggested. Former senior FBI officials involved in the investigation have already left the agency. The report reinforced the importance of ensuring the FBI's work is conducted with rigor, objectivity, and professionalism. Donald Trump and his allies hailed the report as proof of politically motivated investigations, while Republicans like Senator Lindsey Graham called it a "damning indictment of the FBI." Durham's investigation resulted in minimal outcomes, with only a little-known FBI lawyer pleading guilty and the jury acquitting the two men he took to trial. The investigation's cost exceeded $6.5 million. Meanwhile, two other special counsels continue their work, investigating whether Trump and President Biden mishandled sensitive government documents and wrongfully handled classified documents, respectively.
