Understanding an artifact isn’t as easy as looking at it. If the artifact is unusual, it will need to be studied, researched, and carefully assessed before any conclusions can be drawn. Even then, it’s possible to get things wrong, and in some cases, you might find yourself short of answers even when you’ve done all the research! That’s what this video is about – artifacts that have found ways of keeping their secrets no matter how much they’re studied.

Between the 1920s and the 1960s archaeologists discovered a series of mysterious ancient figurines in Siberia. While they were never sure what their purpose was, they all agreed that they represented idealized versions of the female form, because of that they were nicknamed the Venus figurines.

In 2016 it turned out that their gender was incorrectly assumed. The 2016 study conducted of the figures which are said to be 20,000 years old concluded that they aren’t all women at all, some of them are men and children. The figurines were originally found close to the Angara River not far from Lake Baikal. They were considered to be the most important ancient works of art in the region but recent discoveries show we have been misunderstanding them for close to a century.
