Accurate portrayal of the failure to prevent the Challenger disaster

If you go into this movie expecting blockbuster special effects and big-name stars, you'll be disappointed. If you accept this movie for what it is -- a dramatization of the decision-making process that failed to prevent the Challenger disaster, you'll be pleased. I suspect the low ratings for this film come from the first group and the highest ratings come from the second group.

The Challenger story demonstrates the conflicts that arise between government, business, and individuals. In this case the individuals are engineers who struggle to make their voices heard. The business is the space program, and there is money to be made if you are the lowest bidder and cut corners. The government is the flawed, but probably inevitable, political machine that is subject to the whims of a fickle public and the ambition of politicians.

I spent 33 years as an engineer and was in the position portrayed in this film more than a few times. Engineers are hired to get something done that meets requirements for the lowest cost and earliest delivery. Managers are there to see that they do, and sometimes over do it..
