Lee Kuan Yew (16 September 1923 – 23 March 2015), born Harry Lee Kuan Yew, often referred to by his initials LKY, was a Singaporean barrister and statesman who served as the first prime minister of Singapore between 1959 and 1990, and the secretary-general of the People's Action Party between 1954 and 1992. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar from 1955 until his death in 2015. Lee has been widely recognised as the founding father of Singapore for his leadership in turning a poor country into a developed country, and from an island of mudflats and swamps into a thriving metropolis.[2][3]
