Fred Kavli, who chartered a new course for 21st century science philanthropy, passed away on November 21, 2013. Kavil, an entrepreneur and innovator, made his fortune producing precision sensors for automotive, aerospace and industrial applications. In 2000, Kavli founded the Kavli Foundation, "dedicated to the goals of advancing science for the benefit of humanity and promoting increased public understanding and support for scientists and their work."

Kavli was much admired for recognizing the critical importance of funding basic science research that might be considered risky, but with the potential for great rewards. "It is sometimes hard to get support for basic science because people want to see things that have results in a shorter period of time. One of the things we are doing is supporting science in the embryonic stage," Kavli said in a 2012 interview with Vesterheim Magazine.

In 2008, he established the Kavli Prize that recognizes excellence in astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuroscience--;the "fields of the future." The million dollar prizes are presented biannually, in cooperation and partnership with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. Since the Prize's inception, the World Science Festival has proudly presented the announcements live via satellite from Norway, along with programming that delves into the latest developments in the recognized fields.

The World Science Festival gathers great minds in science and the arts to produce live and digital content that allows a broad general audience to engage with scientific discoveries. Our mission is to cultivate a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future.
