A shocking incident happened at 4am on Wed 17 May 2023 where New South Wales police deployed a Taser against a frail, 95-year-old care home resident. The elderly woman, Clare Nowland, was approaching officers slowly, using a walking frame, when they deemed it necessary to open fire on her. The Taser deployment has now resulted in Clare receiving end-of-life care, with critical injuries including a fractured skull and a serious brain bleed. The senior constable who shot her is no longer on active duty, and NSW Council for Civil Liberties president Josh Pallas said police should not be using tasers on vulnerable people experiencing dementia or a mental health crisis.
