Historic speech of President Assad as Syria is welcomed back into the Arab League

19 May 23 “I hope that it marks the beginning of a new phase of Arab action for solidarity among us, for peace in our region, development, and prosperity instead of war and destruction,” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said at the Arab League summit.

It's a “historic opportunity” to address the cracks across the region and not just cure the symptoms. “It is important to leave internal affairs to the country’s people as they are best able to manage their own affairs, prevent external interference, and help exclusively upon request,” he said.

It is the first time Assad has addressed the bloc since Syria was suspended from the Arab League in 2011 with the start of the Syrian war.
