Swarms of Sri Lankan protestors have broken past police water cannons, barricades and tear gas into the presidential palace in Colombo on Saturday, forcing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee for his life.

The government imposed a curfew on Friday evening, which opposition leader Sajith Premadasa urged citizens to ignore, tweeting: “Defy the dictatorship… to make democracy victorious”.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe declared the country bankrupt on Tuesday, while the Energy Ministry revealed fuel supplies have completely run out.
