F-16s for the Ukrainian Air Force seem to be a sure thing now.

The 162nd Wing of the U.S. Air Force, in an initial report, indicates the feasibility of training Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighter jets within a reduced timeframe of approximately a year by omitting certain non-essential training elements.

This proposed abridged training syllabus, which reduces the number of tasks from 250 to about 160, eliminates training on specific operations like U.S. instrument approach procedures, Basic Fighter maneuvers, and others that might not be immediately relevant to Ukrainian operations.

However, the report notes concerns about the English language proficiency of the pilots, which is crucial for aviation, though it acknowledges improvements during the two-week assessment period.

These findings come amid mounting pressure on the U.S. to either transfer F-16s directly to Ukraine or allow third-party transfers. While U.S. officials have consistently prioritized other types of military aid, there are indications that attitudes towards third-party F-16 transfers might be softening.

Despite this, the report recommends conducting a more extensive and formal training event to fully evaluate the situation, taking into account the limitations of the initial informal assessment.

This coincides with an increasing interest from Ukraine in obtaining more modern Western combat jets to supplement their Soviet-era fleets, with NATO allies also pushing for such a move.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has released operational statistics for March 2023, revealing that encounters with individuals at the Southwest border decreased by 23% from the previous year.

The CBP had 162,317 encounters for individuals who entered the country between Ports of Entry at the Southwest border, marking a 25% increase from February 2023 but a significant decrease from the numbers recorded in March 2022 and 2021. Furthermore, the rate of increase from February to March 2023 was lesser than those of the two preceding years.

These figures, which include Border Patrol encounters and noncitizens processed at Ports of Entry, also showed that single adult encounters constituted 69% of the total and increased by 19% compared to February.

Family unit encounters saw an increase of 38%, while encounters of unaccompanied children rose by 14%. The report also noted a 28% increase in unique individuals encountered from February to March 2023. In a bid to maintain border security, the CBP intends to enforce immigration laws and counter smuggler misinformation more aggressively, while also resuming expedited removal proceedings under Title 8 authorities.
