At the local book fair raising money for refugees I picked up a copy of the Merry Muses of Caledonia:

This book is Robert Burn's secret collection of self written and collected bawdy songs.

I won't be recording any of the bawdy songs on this channel, but this version is the Dainty Davey that Burns based his far more intimate version on. That said, this song has its origins in a Minister, David Williamson who was been hidden in a house dressed as a woman while an outlaw in 1674.

The story is that David managed to impregnate the 18 year old daughter of Lady Cherrytree while he was 'hiding' in the bed. This song was doing the rounds during his lifetime:
