The national archive of the Netherlands-Indies - or Landsarchief - was moved to this building by then governor-general Daendles after it became clear that the old location at lower altidute wasn't that safe from flooding. He set up the national archive in the villa of the 31st governor-general of the Netherlands-Indies, Reinier de Klerk.
