Day 448 of the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine Claims Interception of Hypersonic Missiles in Intense Attack on Kyiv

Ukraine has announced that it successfully shot down six Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in an "exceptionally dense" barrage fired at Kyiv. The missiles, claimed by Russia to surpass all existing air defence systems, were part of an onslaught of 18 missiles of various types targeted at the city.

Russia denies the interception of its Kinzhal missiles and alleges that one of them destroyed a US-supplied Patriot air defence system. While the claims made by both countries cannot be independently verified, if Ukraine's assertions hold true, it signifies a significant setback for Russia's most advanced missile fleet.

The introduction of modern Western defence systems, including Patriots, has played a crucial role in countering these threats. Russia maintains that the Kinzhal missiles, capable of traveling at speeds over 11,000 km/h (7,000 mph), are invulnerable to any air defence system globally. The recent attack follows a period of increased Russian air campaigns, with Kyiv being bombarded eight times this month, potentially preceding an anticipated Ukrainian offensive.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has secured promises of substantial military equipment support from Western allies during his recent European tour. As the conflict intensifies, the people of Ukraine continue to endure the devastating consequences of the war, including displacement and widespread destruction.
