This Garden Bed Had Problems...

This Hugelkultur garden bed was about 8 months old and had serious problems... Since I built it last year, I have tried many different crops in it, but most have languished. The problem was that the organic matter was buried too deep, and the native Florida sand had been piled up too high on top of the logs, meaning that the plant roots couldn't benefit from the sequestered moisture and nutrients below them. So we tore the whole bed apart and improved it. I'm always impressed by what can be a achieved in a couple hours of work every evening.
