Why Do Motorcycles have a Gear Indicator?

Just stirring the pot. Why do we need/want a gear indicator?
I can see the value when you were coasting for a while and then want to get back on the throttle, but we only HAVE five or six gears and in the areas you'd be unsure, being off a gear isn't gonna be a big deal on most bikes.
