Why Trey Gowdy Left Politics

In this interview, Trey Gowdy discusses why he left politics and why being a prosecutor was the most fulfilling job he ever had. As a former federal prosecutor and state prosecutor, he loved standing in front of 12 people and persuading them, and he loved the process of persuading people beyond a reasonable doubt. The justice system is a fair system, and the result and process both matter. In contrast, politics is all about ratifying what people already believe, finding out what they believe, and repeating it back to them.

As a prosecutor, Trey felt a bond between himself and the victims of crimes, such as parents whose daughter had been dead for a decade with no arrests or prosecutions. After being able to convict the person who did it, there was just a bond that develops between the survivors or victims of the crime. This feeling was something that he found most fulfilling in his job as a prosecutor, and there is nothing in politics that compares to it.

However, being a federal prosecutor started to wear on him as he realized that over half of the cases he tried were drug cases, and the laws were not proportional to the crime. He saw that someone who had committed child pornography would get six months more than someone who had cocaine with intent to distribute, even though they had not committed any violent crimes. This realization was the beginning of his decision to leave the job.
