From the time of the earliest electronic computers, man has dreamed of replicating the human mind in silicon. Are there unbridgeable physical problems that make such a machine impossible, or does each advance in artificial intelligence bring us closer to realizing the dream?

Are there essential features of the physical make-up and workings of a brain that prevent us, even in theory, from creating a machine that truly thinks? Architects of the Mind: A Blueprint for the Human Brain explores robust memory, processing speed, and programming, and how close we are to re-creating the human brain.
