We know what is expected (The parable of the talents Matthew 25:14-30)
If you are in a hurry and are driving way to fast and you see the blue lights in your rear-view mirror, what do you expect to happen? If you take a college class, never show up and never turn in any assignments what do you expect to happen when your final grades come in? Let’s say you get a new job but rarely show up and never do what you are supposed to do while you are there, what do you expect to happen? As we study the parable of the talents from Matthew chapter 25, I think that there is something that we need to understand. Both individuals who was rewarded for their hard work and service should not have been surprised by what they received, they did exactly what was expected of them by the master. The same is true of the individual who was punished for his lack of hard work and service, he should not have been surprised because he did the exact opposite of what was expected of him by the master. We live in a society that wants to act surprised when they get exactly what they should have expected to receive for their behavior. Our society may cater to these individuals and show them sympathy but rest assured God will not and He will give all of us exactly what He has said He will in His word.
We have a society that has more access to the Bible than any other generation that every existed. You can by a hard copy of the Bible at almost any convenience store, internets retailers will ship them directly to your home, and technology gives us 24-hour access at our fingertips. No one should be surprised on the day of judgement when they stand before God and He renders exactly what He said he would render unto them through His Word. This parable is a stark warning to us all, those who are good and faithful servants will receive rewards and those that are not will receive punishment. We can not live our lives as a bad servants that ignores the commands of our master and expect to be rewarded when we stand before Him. We can not pick and choose the portions of scripture that we want to apply to our lives and the ones that we want to ignore, if God says it, then that is exactly what we should expect. Do not be caught off guard by lies that seek to twist and manipulate the reality of the Word of God which is full of warnings to those who do not fulfill His will for their life.
