Artificial Intelligence expert and New York University Professor Emeritus Gary Marcus told a Senate subcommittee hearing on Tuesday that artificial general intelligence will eventually replace “a large fraction” of human jobs. “We’re not that close to artificial general intelligence, despite all the media hype and so forth. I would say that what we have right now is a small sampling of the AI that we will build,” said Marcus. Artificial intelligence is a machine that performs specific human tasks and cannot be utilized outside of its programmed functions; artificial general intelligence is a hypothetical machine that is made to function and perform all tasks with human capabilities.
