Hopes for Ceasefire in Israel-Palestinian Conflict, Despite Rocky Start

Efforts are underway to establish a ceasefire and bring an end to the five days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militants in Gaza. The ceasefire got off to a shaky start, with both sides continuing to fire for two hours after it began on Saturday evening.

At least 33 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Tuesday, while Palestinian rocket fire into Israel has claimed the lives of one Israeli and one Palestinian worker. Egypt led the mediation efforts and urged both sides to adhere to the ceasefire agreement.
