The 1894 edition's preface explains the "Joseph begat Jesus" passage conforms to many other references in Matthew that reflect Joseph is the true father of Jesus -- all of which are missing in our modern Bibles.

The 1896 edition lacks that preface but is an updated more final edition.

Because Lewis' edition matches the accounts of Justin Martyr in 2 writings -- and he died in 160s -- we know that Lewis' edition must originate from 160s and not later. The story of the virgin birth is likely added around 180-200 to Matthew and Luke, because Tertullian in early 200s is quoting a pre-virgin birth account of Mary thinking Jesus as gone "out of his mind" by going from carpenter to preacher at Capernaum. Terrtullian quotes that from Luke without it dawning on him that this is at odds a virgin birth if it were present in the early 200s.
