NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory released a mosaic of Saturn and its entire ring system that was stitched together from photographs taken by the spacecraft Cassini. Carolyn Porco, leader of the imaging team, explains how the portrait was crafted and earth’s cameo appearance.

The once-in-a-lifetime mosaic is from the July 19 photo session when Cassini photographed Saturn during a total eclipse of the sun. In this video, Carolyn Porco details the process of creating the natural color of Saturn in this masterpiece and the role Earth, as a pale blue dot, plays in the photo.

Carolyn Porco sat down with the World Science Festival to talk about the Cassini mission. In this video, learn about the history of Cassini and its great discoveries.

The World Science Festival gathers great minds in science and the arts to produce live and digital content that allows a broad general audience to engage with scientific discoveries. Our mission is to cultivate a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future.
