Operation FishBowl
👇
Operation Fishbowl was a series of high-altitude nuclear tests conducted by the United States in 1962 as part of the larger Operation Dominic nuclear test program.
👇
The tests were planned to be completed during the first half of 1962 with three tests named Bluegill, Starfish, and Urraca.
👇
The Thor missile was used to lift warheads into near-space to conduct high-altitude nuclear explosion tests, which were collectively called Operation Fishbowl.
👇
The tests were scheduled quickly to respond in kind to the Soviet resumption of testing after the tacit 1958–1961 test moratorium.
👇
Twenty of these shots were to test new weapons designs, six to test weapons effects, and several shots to confirm the reliability of existing weapons.
👇
The tests were conducted at an altitude of 91.3 miles, 41 miles downrange from Johnston Island, and only 3 kilometers from the airzero point.
