FERTILIZER 🤔, Merrick, Long Island, New York

There is a lot of algae shown above the water which looks very unnatural because it is. The algae is most likely from fertilizer. When people apply fertilizer onto grass it helps the grass grow, but when it rains it makes the fertilizer go in the sewer system and into the water which grows algae. As the algae covers the surface of the water it blocks the sunlight which lets the plants that produce oxygen under the water not able to go through photosynthesis, which means they aren’t able to produce oxygen or make energy for them to live. As the algae ends it’s life decomposers (bacteria) have to decompose the algae, but doing this they are using the dissolved oxygen which has severely lessened from the plants not being able to go through photosynthesis. As they use all of the dissolved oxygen the other organisms in the water that need that oxygen to survive start to die out which causes chaos in the entire ecosystem. So the lesson we have to learn is putting unnatural and unnecessary stuff hurts the environment and internally hurts us. JKS
