How the UFC pound-for-pound rankings are decided
The Main Event for UFC 284 between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski was built around the pound-for-pound ranking. Everyone thought that if Islam won, he would dethrone Volkanovski as the UFC's number 1 pound-for-pound fighter. However, Islam won and he still stayed as the number 2. Then Jon Jones returned after a three-year hiatus and after just a single win, became the new number 1 pound-for-pound fighter. That does not make sense and there is a good reason for it. The entire ranking system in the UFC is subjective. A group of media members vote to decide the rankings. This includes all the weight class rankings as well. No wonder many fighters, especially those lower down on the list, often complain of the rankings being biased sometimes and outright nonsensical other times. In the UFC's defense, ranking fighters across weight classes can be tricky but they could have come up with something better
