MY MOTHER WAS A PREACHER

To all the dear mothers following me on these programs, Happy Mother's Day to you. Passing this mile marker each year without remembering my mother is impossible. She was a 4'11" Swedish woman with a lifetime passion for loving God with all her heart and preaching the gospel, which she did for over 60 years.
Viola, Margaret Erickson Watkins was born again around 12 when the neighbor girl invited her to church. She was the only one converted in her family. Despite the criticism and resistance, she remained faithful to the Pentecostal church in Long Beach, California, as she grew in the Lord.
At 23, she married my father, and they took off for Texas to start their first church.
They pioneered around ten churches for the next 60 years and pastored 20+.
Faithfulness was the lifeblood of our home, and my mother was the biggest promoter of it. She raised my two sisters and me in very uncomfortable places in many states, and we lived in trailers, tents, and the Sunday school rooms of churches. And all of that, Mom never lost her zeal for the kingdom of God and the privilege of her prayer life.
My two sisters launched into their ministry as traveling evangelists and spent the remainder of their active life walking in the revelation of what it meant to be a son and a daughter of God. Like myself, they traveled to many nations and other places in our country, revealing Christ in an unusual way.
An old song from the church says," tell mother I'll be there in answer to her prayer."
My 60+ years in the gospel ministry are directly connected to my mother's prayer for me. Today, I thank God for the mothers of this nation that know how to pray, and because of that, I take courage that we shall see the kingdom of God advance to the point where it shapes this nation into its destiny that God intended.
