Philosophy has been central to human history from ancient China to today. Over the centuries, famous Chinese philosophers have developed exciting and compelling ideas and made important contributions to many sectors of China. Xunzi is one of the most famous Chinese philosophers. He significantly contributed to China's history, culture, and social structures.
His real name was Xun Kuang, but people usually call him Xunzi (Master Xun), an honorific suffix added to the names of many philosophers. We don't know much about his life except that he was born in the state of Zhao, now Shanxi Province in north-central China, and spent some time at the Zhixia Academy of Philosophers in Qi, which the ruler of that eastern state ran.
Later, because of rumors, he moved south to the state of Chu, where he became the magistrate of a small district in 255 BCE and then died in retirement.
The Xunzi, Xunzi's most famous book, had a significant impact on the history of Confucian thought, which is why he is important to the history of Confucian philosophy. This book has 32 chapters, and most of them are thought to be written by him, without changes or fabrications made later.
An essential step in the evolution of Chinese philosophy may be traced back to Xunzi's writings. The style of earlier philosophical literature, like the Analects, Daodejing, Mencius, and Zhuangzi, based on stories and sayings, needed to be revised to explain fully and convincingly the complicated philosophical debates of Xunzi's time.
Xunzi was the first great Confucian philosopher to write his well-organized writings and have his disciples write down his sayings and conversations. In his book, he introduced a stricter way of writing that emphasized developing a topic, using strong reasoning, giving details, and being transparent.
Xunzi's most famous dictum is that "the nature of man is evil; his goodness is only acquired training." What Xunzi preached was essentially a philosophy of culture. He said that human nature is made up of instinctual drives that are selfish, chaotic, and antisocial when left to their own devices.
But society as a whole has a civilizing effect on the individual, gradually training and shaping him until he becomes a disciplined, morally aware person. The most important parts of this process are the li (ceremonies and rituals, rules of social behavior, and traditional customs) and the music.
His philosophical writings and written works are still around today, and his teachings significantly impacted the Han Dynasty's important state doctrines.
In today's video, we'll look at some of the famous Xunzi quotes from this great Chinese philosopher providing an insight into his thoughts and sayings on human nature.
