Along with Confucius and Mencius, Xunzi was one of the founders of Confucian philosophy. In many ways, he defends Confucianism in a more complete and sophisticated way than Mencius.
Xunzi lived near the end of the Warring States period (453-221 BCE), often seen as when most later Chinese philosophy was formed. It was a time with many different ideas, similar to ancient Greece, so Xunzi was familiar with many other points of view.
In response to some of the other thinkers of the time, he put together a systematic version of Confucianism that includes ethics, metaphysics, political theory, the philosophy of language, and a well-developed philosophy of education.
Xunzi is known for thinking that ritual is essential for changing people's original nature. Human nature doesn't have a moral compass built in, and when left to its own devices, it leads to conflict and chaos. This is why Xunzi describes human nature as bad. Rituals are, therefore, an essential part of a stable society. He focused on how people create the roles and practices of an orderly society, and he gave Heaven and Nature a much smaller role as sources of order or morality than most other thinkers of the time.
Even though his ideas were later seen as outside of Confucian orthodoxy, they still significantly impacted China and continue to be interesting today.
In today's video, we'll look at 5 of the best Xunzi quotes from this great Chinese philosopher providing an insight into his thoughts and sayings on matters of wisdom, humanity, destiny, compassion and life.
