“Essential Additions to Faith”
7th in our series the Epistle of 2nd Peter

I. Virtues essential to continued civilization - Proverbs 11:11
* A. The essential glue which holds any civilization together is truth telling
* B. Lies undermine relationships and that destroys trust 

II. To Faith we are to Add - 2 Peter 1:5-7
* A. The Virtues are vital to the blessed life, and to virtue we must add Knowledge from God’s Word
* B. To Knowledge we must add Self Control
* 1. The discipline of mind is to manifest in discipline of the body - it is the ninth of the fruits of the Spirit - Gal 5:23
* 2. Jesus is the perfect example of a man fully self disciplined - 
* C. To Self Control we must add Perseverance
* 1. It is “remaining under, patient endurance”
* 2. God produces this attribute through trials - James 1:2-4
* D. To Perseverance we must add Godliness
* 1. This is reverence toward God, piety
* 2. It is rooted in the fear of the Lord - Psalm 111:10
* E. To Godliness we must add Brotherly Kindness
* 1. The fifth fruit of the Spirit 
* 2. Jesus often stopped what He was doing and help others in need - Mark 6:34
* F. To Brotherly Kindness we must add Love (Charity)
* 1. A more specific definition of love - agape 
* 2. This always involves self sacrifice 
* a. Greater love - John 15:13
* b. It places the true needs of another above one’s own
