The ironworks was founded in 1766 and operated until 1882, producing iron for the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. You’ll get to see the old stone walls, furnaces, waterwheels, and other structures that tell the story of this historic site. It was founded in 1766 by Peter Hasenclever, a German ironmaster who brought over 500 workers from Germany to build the ironworks. The ironworks operated for over 100 years, producing iron for a variety of uses, including cannons for the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
